A complete refurbishment and extension to a double fronted end of terrace Victorian house in East Dulwich.
A reorientated bespoke staircase forms a new reception space while a rear extension provides additional space for open plan kitchen and living area. At first floor a projecting bay contains a bath with views to the garden. At second floor a master suite is introduced with floor to ceiling glazing providing panoramic views over the surrounding rooftops.
The additions are conceived as a ribbon of 'Corten' steel - the distinctive colour referencing the bands of red brick to the existing front elevation. The resulting folded form steps down the external facade serving to bind the newly formed spaces together and provide a striking contrast between old and new.

A new build contemporary single dwelling in the conservation area of the Somerset market town of Crewkerne within the setting of the Grade 1 listed 15th century Parish Church.
An existing dilapidated bungalow has been replaced with a contemporary new home to lifetime home standards to provide accommodation for a retired couple.
A simple front elevation in coursed hamstone is set back from the site boundary, to maximise views and reflect the importance of the Church. A rear elevation of large openings frames views of the countryside. A hanging slate wall enables the building to disappear into the roofscape when set within key views of the church from the surrounding context.

Lendel Stephens has submitted proposals to Royal Greenwich for a contemporary 3 bedroom new build dwelling on a backland site in Plumpstead.
The proposal is rooted in its context with principle elements adopting traditional forms whilst referencing the backdrop of rear outriggers and extensions to the surrounding terraced houses with, their pitched roofs and offset elevations.
A simple palette of materials is proposed with tones similar to the surrounding architecture. To the walls and roof timber cladding of different textures and layers is proposed. This is a natural, sustainable and cost effective solution inspired by the surrounding boundary fences and various outbuildings to rear gardens. Layered timber battens to west and east facades will provide depth to these elevations and provide a play on transparency and shade. These battens will also control different degrees of privacy, depending on internal use and location, whilst letting light into the internal spaces.
The refurbishment and extension of an existing residential building on Mundania Road, East Dulwich.
The rear and side extension increases the residential accommodation and forms an open plan living space, utility room and ground floor accessible shower room.
A faceted external wall to the extension maximises sunlight and daylight and opens the new living space to the garden.
The extension is formed with an insulated render wall system on a blockwork substructure.
Extensive upgrades to the thermal performance of the existing building are achieved through the application of a rendered insulation system to the existing external walls, as well as the introduction of insulation to the existing ground floor and new roof construction. Renewable energy generation is provided with the application of solar PV panels to the roof dormer and garage roofs, resulting in a retrofit, fit for the future.

The refurbishment of a family bathroom within a Victorian terrace house on Shenley Road.
The client provided a brief to update an existing tired and dark bathroom to create a light filled space providing an illusion of space with a clean simple aesthetic.
A muted palette of materials were chosen consisting of terrazzo and tadelakt plaster which contrasted with anthracite towel rail and shower screen frame.
The space was reinvigorated through the introduction of a roof light over a walk in, level access shower and floor to ceiling strip window.
